You may love the elegance of white gold and think of it as a premium item, but did you know that white gold was actually created as replacement for another metal when it was in scarce supply?
People who have their heart set on platinum, but end up buying white gold may understand this. White gold was created after World War I, at a time platinum was not plentiful. Getting platinum was a lot tougher than it had been before and jewelers were looking for something that could give customers the look of platinum without the high cost of platinum.
We don’t know who came up with the idea of white gold, but we can tell you that the idea was to make an alloy of gold that somehow managed to bleach its normal yellow hue. If you were not already aware, this is not an unusual practice since most gold jewelry is made of an alloy. It may be hard to believe, but as metals go, gold is considered to be rather soft. Combining gold with another metal in an alloy makes it so the gold can shaped and so that shape can remain intact.
This is why it is part of a gold buyer’s job to extract the pure gold from any gold objects you give when you sell gold. Alloys are wonderful for making jewelry, but when it comes to selling gold, you cannot include the other metals in the price for gold.
When you contact a gold buyer with old gold jewelry to sell, they will test your gold jewelry first to see how much of it is pure gold and how much of it is other metals. Then, after they have ascertained this information, they will let you know how much cash for gold you can expect.
Earlier this month, someone paid $18,300 at auction for what is reputed to be a pile of Elvis Presley’s hair. This was hair that was removed from his head when he joined the army in the 1950s.
Can you imagine paying that kind of money for hair? How do they even know that it really belonged to Elvis? Why would hair clippings be worth that much?
It has also been announced that another treasure that belonged to Elvis is going up for sale soon, but this item would be valuable even d it had not onced belonged to The King.
Someone will have the chance to buy a very unique gold ring that Elvis once wore while performing. Since it is gold ring and we all know the ever-increasing value of gold, it would be worth something no matter what. The fact that it once adorned the finger of a music superstar makes it worth that much more.
And this gold ring has a story that goes with it–Elvis gave it to a concert goer in 1975 after that man caught the guitar Elvis threw into the crowd, but let someone else have it. Eventually Elvis brought the man onstage and gave him a gold rind with 19 diamonds.
We are not sure where this man is now and imagine that if someone set to sell a gold ring of this magnitude, there must be a pretty good reason why. Perhaps that man is deceased and no one in his family has that much nostalgia for Elvis.
Whatever the reason, people know that now is great time to sell gold. Since the price of gold has increased the cash for gold you can get for selling gold items has also increased. The sooner you contact a gold buyer, the sooner you can get your cash for gold.
When it comes to understanding how gold is measured, almost everyone understands karats. We discussed some of the finer points of karate weight measurement earlier in the week. The basic idea is that the higher the karat weight, the more pure gold a piece of jewelry contains.
So now you know the finer points of karat weight, but what about fineness? This term is not used quite as often, although it might be helpful to understand, just in case you see a measurement for fineness on a piece of gold jewelry you own or on gold jewelry that you would like to buy.
Perhaps one of the reasons that fineness is not discussed more often is because it is calculated in conjunction with karat weight. Some people probably think that karat weight is all the measurement they need to worry about when it comes to gold jewelry.
As we have mentioned, 24 karat gold is 100% pure gold and similarly, 24 karat gold is also 100% fine. When gold is less then 24 karats, its fineness also decreases. For example, 20 karat gold is 83.3% fine, while 14 karat gold comes in as 58.3% fine. Knowledge of this type of measurement may be useful for people who like to get an idea of things based on percentages. As you can see, while 14 karat gold is more than 50% gold pure gold, it is quite a few percentage points behind 20 karat gold. If you tend to think in percentages, fineness may help you understand the price you are offered for your gold jewelry when you sell gold to a gold buyer. The cash for gold you get from selling gold is based on the amount of pure gold that the gold you are selling contains.
Fineness is not a measurement that is usually stamped on a piece of gold jewelry the way that karat weight is, but knowledge of fineness is still useful.
A piece of jewelry may contain gold, but it may not actually be made of gold. There is a difference.
For example, most of us believe that karat weight is a sufficient indicator of value when it comes to gold. But what does karat weight really tell us? It tells us how much gold a piece of jewelry contains. It does not tell us that the jewelry is literally made of gold. The value of the gold in jewelry can change for you based on the reasons you have for keeping it around.
When you want to sell gold jewelry to a gold buyer, you should know that the more pure gold the jewelry contains, the more cash for gold you will get.
Jewelry designers know that gold is a soft metal. Keeping that in mind, jewelry designers know that sometimes it would not be practical to design pieces of gold jewelry that contain 24 karat gold, which is gold in its purist state. This is why they make jewelry from alloys that mix gold and other metals–they know that consumers want gold jewelry that will last.
When other metals are introduced, the karat weight of a piece of jewelry decreases. The gold it contains is still pure, but the karat weight changes because gold makes up less of the weight in the presence of other metals.
If you didn’t know this already, the most frequently used karat weights are a kind of equation– adding up to 24. Twenty-four karat gold contains 24 parts of pure gold; 18 karat gold is 18 parts gold plus 6 parts of other metals; 14 karat gold contains 14 parts of pure gold with 10 parts of other metals. Finally, 10 karat gold is the one equation where there is less gold than other metals because it contains 10 parts pure gold blended with 14 parts of other metals.
A British museum was recently awarded a grant that will allow the museum to start a new gallery that will exhibit rare objects of gold that hearken back to the Bronze Age. Some of the gold jewelry, gold weapons and gold armor that will one day be displayed in this new gallery were found on the Salisbury Plain, which is not far from Stonehenge.
Among some of the gold items that were found on Salisbury Plain were what one museum official said could be considered as Britain’s first crown jewels. Researchers believe that that the gold and other valuable items were once the property of someone of great significance. They cannot say for certain if this person was a military leader, a religious leader or royalty. It is quite possible that this person was all three of those things. The museum has wanted to let the public view these items, but did not have a proper space to do so. Perhaps once the public sees it, they will get even more feedback on just who the owner of all of this gold may have been.
Some of you may have gold items and you cannot exactly say where they have come from but you are not interested in putting them on display nor do you want to wear them. This is why you hid these gold items out of sight in drawers or left them in the attic. At the same time, you probably wish you could get a grant or some magic influx of cash…well, we cannot give you a grant, but we can give you cash for gold. When you decide to sell gold that you have forgotten about for years to a gold buyer, you can get money for gold as a reward.
This week, we have been looking at different types of gold. Of the colored golds, white and rose gold are probably the more well known. However the gold family has many more hues. Experimenting with gold has led to products with a variety of colors and properties.
While white gold is created using an alloy of yellow gold and other metals, there are several methods for creating black gold. It can be created through electroplating or patination techniques. Both of these methods involve manipulating the surface of an object so that it appears different. The surface of gold and other metals can also be altered with lasers so that they appear black. Black gold can also be created with a chemical vapor deposition process.
Purple gold is often used as a gemstone because it is so very brittle and can shatter easily. Sometimes purple gold, which is made from an alloy of gold and aluminum, is also known as amethyst of violet gold. Because purple gold usually contains about 79% gold, it can technically be labeled as 18 carat gold.
Blue gold can be made from gold and indium. The alloys used to make rose gold can vary depending on how deep of a red is desired, while the alloy for gray (or grey) gold is often made with a specific formula. Gray gold combines silver, manganese and copper along with gold.
Green gold is made from an alloy of silver and gold. However, a different kind of green can be made when you sell gold to a gold buyer. Mix the little effort it takes to mail in gold to an online gold buyer with that gold buyer’s professional expertise and you end up with cash for gold. This is not an alloy or something for you to wear as adornment, but like some gold alloys, cash for gold is quite malleable in that you can spend or save it as you wish.
Earlier in the week, we talked about white gold and how it is an alloy that included yellow gold with other metals. The inclusion of other metals changes the properties of the gold so that it is usually wither stronger or softer than it would have been it is normal state.
Rose gold was once all the rage in Russia and so it was known as Russian gold at the start of the nineteenth century. Now it is most often known by the more physically descriptive name of rose gold and sometimes called pink or read gold.
While white gold is not white in the way a piece of paper is, rose gold really does have a reddish or pinkish hue. This is because rose gold is yellow gold mixed in an alloy with copper. While white gold is often coated with rhodium to make it truly “white” and rid it of any brownish tint, rose gold doesn’t need extra coloration to become reddish. However, the amount of copper included in the alloy is what makes the difference in the deepness of the red. Less copper make the gold pinkish and more copper means the gold with be closer to red.
As if this was not confusing enough, the music world employs the term rose gold for something that is not really gold at all. a layer of silver, covered with a layer of copper is used as a finish for the inside of some woodwind instruments. There is no gold, but the use of a copper alloy and the resemblance to rose gold helped this term catch on, even if the rose gold on the inside of a musical instrument is fool’s gold in a sense, since it isn’t real gold.
So be advised that you cannot present any woodwind instruments to a gold buyer in an attempt to sell gold. You can, however, present objects such as jewelry made from yellow gold and other gold alloys if you want to get cash for gold.
Most people are aware that white gold does not appear naturally in nature, but just in case, we wanted to make sure that you knew that this. White gold is an alloy that is a mixture of traditional yellow gold an another “white” metal ,such as nickel or palladium. This knowledge is useful for people who have allergic reactions to nickel. If you are one of those people, then you should be aware that white gold may cause you similar problems, since it is often made with nickel.
The metals included in the alloy got white hold can make all the difference when it comes to the malleability of the gold and the durability of the object made with it. When palladium is added to gold, the result is an alloy that is easy to manipulate. Alloys of gold and palladium are well-suited to make gemstone settings. In contrast to palladium, when nickel is added to gold, the result is an allow that is hard and durable. Gold that has been mixed with nickel is good to use for rings and pins.
As if mixing gold with metals like nickel and palladium were not enough, producing white gold usually also ends with coating the object with another metal: rhodium. The rhodium is used to give the white gold a truly white finish since the mixture of gold with palladium or nickel isn’t exactly white, but rather a little brownish.
Although it is not found in nature, white gold is measures in carats just as yellow gold is. So the alteration of its properties does not change how this type of gold is measured.
When it comes to measuring the gold that you sell to a gold buyer, the gold buyer is looking for pure gold. Part of what a gold buyer does is refining the gold, to separate the real gold from other metals. The cash for gold you get when you sell gold is dependent on the amount of gold that an object contains.
At least one news source with ties to the gold industry announced that gold jewelry is remains popular for people who are getting married. This news came as a bit of a surprise to us since all we have been hearing for years is that gold jewelry had fallen out of favor with prospective brides and grooms.
Of course when it was mentioned that gold is still a top choice among people getting married, they did not make the distinction among the various colors of gold. We imagine that while it is true that yellow gold has fallen in popularity, white gold has likely gained in popularity. So perhaps the news that gold is till a favorite for people getting married rests on the popularity of white gold.
And of course white gold may owe some of its popularity to platinum. People who do not want to spend the money for platinum jewelry sometimes go for white gold instead.
Another thing we learned was that engaged couples are choosing to get gold jewelry for the wedding in a package instead of a la carte. So rather than buying a gold engagement ring and then getting gold wedding bands separately, they are getting the entire set—gold engagement and gold wedding rings together.
For some of you the popularity of gold as a choice for wedding and engagement rings matters very little. Perhaps you can only think of ridding yourself of the gold jewelry you received when you married or from a person you used to date. That is okay. A gold buyer is here to help ease some of your pain. You can easily sell gold or sell platinum jewelry if it is simply a painful reminder of a relationship that you would like to forget. No need to hang on to gold or even platinum jewelry that will take your mind to unpleasant places. Even if you try to hide it in a jewelry box, you will still know that it is there. Money can’t buy you love and it can’t make you forget a relationship that went awry, but some cash for gold can lift your spirits a little.
Lately there has been talk in the news of a debate among collectors of Barbie dolls: Should Barbie be left in the box or taken out of the box. We certainly do not know how to answer this question. What we do know is that id she is wearing a 24 carat bracelet as she is in the 50th anniversary edition, that gold bracelet deserves to be seen.
This special edition Barbie doll also has some white and black diamonds to go along with her 24 carat gold chain bracelet. That is a lot of expensive jewelry from a woman made of plastic. This is not your little girl’s Barbie. The ones that I remember only had plastic rings. They didn’t have bracelets at all, much less bracelets made of 24 carat gold..
Some of you may be thinking–hey, I don’t even have a 24 carat gold bracelet, much less white and black diamonds! But wait, are you sure. Some of us have so much stuff we forget all that we have. You may not have any white and black diamonds just lying around the house, but you likely have some gold jewelry that you have forgotten about. You may have gold that was given to you as a gift, but you did not like it so much. You may have gold jewelry that used to be your favorite and you used to wear it all the time until at some point it fell out of favor and you left it unworn.
If you want new gold jewelry, you could just go out and buy some, but why keep bringing more things into the house? Instead, sell gold that you are not using and use the cash for gold you get to buy gold jewelry that you will want to wear now. You are not Barbie, so you need not debate whether or not you should be seen. If you want some new gold jewelry to show off, give some to get some when you sell gold to a gold buyer.
