The Mysterious Seven Cities of Gold

Some stories seem too good to be true and others appear to be quite possible thanks to a dash of authenticity. Such is the case of the tales that were told about the Seven Cities of Gold, tales that started to circulate in the 12th century and fueled quite a few exploratory expeditions.

Although the idea that there could exist Seven Cities of Gold just waiting to be found seemed like a fantasy, the fact the storied of these legendary cities of gold had their roots in the Moors’ conquest of Spain made them seem a little more real.

After all, the Moors really did conquer Spain, so the idea that seven clergymen would flee from Mérida, Spain to save their lives and keeps highly prized religious objects away from the Moors, is not that far fetched.

But here is where the story gets murky–these seven clergymen fled to parts unknown with the precious religious objects and founded cities that became very prosperous. And according to the tales, the main wealth of these cities lay in the fact that they had a copious amount of a very precious resource: gold.

At first it seemed that the seven clergymen only founded two gold-rich cities, but with time, the tale changed, as tales do. In later versions of the tale, the cities of gold multiplied—instead of two, there were seven cities brimming with gold, one for each of the brave men who left Spain. Because of course two citied of gold was not nearly enough to satisfy the imagination of those who wanted this golden dream to be a reality.

The thought of all the wealth that these cities laden with gold must contain inspired more than a few to go in search of them. But as far as we know, none of them even found the one city of gold, much less seven cities filled with gold. They did, however, get the opportunity to travel to the New World, even if they did not find the gold they sought.

Do you also long for some of the wealth that gold can provide? Well, you will have a much easier time getting cash for gold than the conquistadors of times past. If you search through your home for unwanted gold object such as broken gold watches, broken gold chains, mismatched gold earrings and old gold rings, you can sell them to a gold buyer.  After you sell gold, you will feel as if you have conquered the world (or at least some clutter).

Ring in the New Year with Cash for Gold

When it comes to ringing in the new year, Peruvians like to do it with a gold twist.

All over the world people have traditions for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day that involve eating certain foods or engaging in or not engaging in certain activities as a way to start the new year off on the right foot.
Well, in Peru, they incorporate a lot of the precious metal that is gold in order to start the year off in a prosperous way. For some in Peru, it is very important to toast the new year by drinking a glass of champagne that has a piece of gold jewelry in it.

Others in Peru would not dare start the new year off without standing in a doorway and throwing a dozen gold coins over their left shoulder every time the clock strikes at midnight.
One reason for these actions is that it is thought that starting the year off in such a fashion is a way to guarantee that a person will be prosperous.

On the other side of the globe in China, people like to adorn their homes in both red and gold on New Year’s Day. Again, the use of gold is considered to be a harbinger of wealth. Actually, the Chinese do not only think that gold is an indication of financial success, but that is can also indicate happiness.

These are great and festive ways to ring in the new year, but may we make a suggestion? Rather than throwing that gold ring into a wine glass, you could sell your gold ring and other gold jewelry and get cash for gold. If you still want to throw a dozen gold coins over your shoulder as the clock strikes midnight, go ahead. There is nothing to stop you from picking up those gold coins later. Once your gold coins have been used to symbolize the wealth you want, you can use them in a more practical way. Sell gold coins to a gold buyer.

We know that you have likely been out and about a lot during the holiday season. After spending time in stores prior to the Christmas holiday, perhaps you also went back to the stores for some of those post-Christmas sales. So if you want to recoup some of that money you spent without having to go too far, you can sell your gold to an online gold buyer.

Gold Nanowires Used to Fight Cancer

Gold and gold nanoparticles are the continuous subjects of scientific research because scientists have found that gold is useful in so many ways.

One of science’s latest findings is that gold nanowires may prove useful in combating cancer. Researchers at the University of Idaho have been experimenting with making gold nanowires that can navigate the bloodstream to reach cancer cells. Once the gold nanowire reaches the cancerous cells, the gold nanowire can be heated using an electromagnetic field and in this way the cancerous cells are destroyed.

Research continues and this method of combating cancer as not yet been perfected. In fact, there are other scientists who are working on a faster application of the same principles using gold-bearing nanotubes.

One reason that medicine and science are especially excited by the possibilities offered by this research with gold nanowire and gold-bearing nanotubes is that it could provide a way to fight cancer while containing damage to healthy cells.

It is amazing to think that these extremely tall particles of gold could be formed into something that could combat something that is so dangerous and heartbreaking as cancer.

However, gold can do you a lot of good and it does not even have to be broken down to the microscopic level. When you sell gold to a gold buyer–be it a large gold pendant, thick gold chain or small gold earrings, you can get cash for gold.

The gold that you can see can make a huge difference in your life and in your wallet. Just think—if teeny tiny particles that cannot even be seen by the naked eye can be used in such a beneficial way, the gold before you eyes can do so much more. These cancer-fighting methods are still in development, so we may not see them practiced for a while.  But no on has to do any splicing or dicing in lab for you to know the benefits of selling gold. Especially if it is gold that you are currently not using for any specific purpose. You might even have gold jewelry that you do not even like, but you hand on to it “just in case.”

What are you waiting for? Sell gold to a gold buyer and get cash for gold that you can use now. If you have been thinking about selling your gold, there is no need to wait any longer.

Pawning and Consiging Gold vs. Selling Gold for Cash

In the interest of time, and getting cash for gold quickly, you can turn to an online gold buyer. If you take your old gold jewelry and other gold items to a pawn shop, you are simply signing them over for a loan that may not even be to your advantage. And when you attempt to sell old gold jewelry on consignment, you will have to wait for the items to sell and you do not know just how long that may take.

When you pawn something you are essentially taking out a loan and if you do not come back for the item then the pawn shop can sell it. The pawn shop does not purchase the item, say your gold ring, for instance. Since they are not purchasing your gold ring, they do not have to give you its full value when you agree to pawn it. And this says nothing about the character or integrity of the employee or owner of the pawn shop; this is simply how their business works.

And when it comes to selling things on consignment, you should not hold your breath. This is not to say that they will not sell at all, but just to say that the items you leave at a consignment shop may not sell within a time frame that is convenient for you. Plus, some consignment shops put a limit on how long they will keep the items you leave with them. If you leave your gold jewelry at a consignment shop and it does not sell within a certain amount of time, you may have to return to get it.

These days there are a lot of people turning to consignment shops and your gold jewelry would have to compete with that of the swelling numbers of people who are trying to make money off of their old gold items. As we said before, do you really want to wait for a sale that could possibly take months? If and when your gold items are sold, the consignment shop has to get their percentage too. So you may have to wait for a while and you will not get anywhere near what the gold is worth.

Want instant cash for gold? Sell gold to a gold buyer. When you choose an online gold buyer, you will not even have to get in your car to take the gold anywhere. The gold buyer will send you a postage-paid envelope through the mail.

People Are Selling Gold for a Variety of Reasons

Last week, an article about how more and more people have decided to sell gold for scrap hit the wires, courtesy of Reuters new service. The article noted that people are going through attics and jewelry boxes looking for old gold for a variety of reasons–to help with fixed expenses or to buy gifts for the holidays. And a gold buyer will not judge you: whatever your reason are you can get sell gold to get cash for gold and you do not have to explain why you are doing it.

Part of the reason that more people are willing to part with valuable gold items such as gold watches and gold rings is that people are becoming less sentimental about gold jewelry that once would have been kept in the family. Some of this is due to the economic downturn and some of it is due to changes in our culture. The writer for the article interviewed relationship expert Dr. Joyce Brothers and she said that with the increase in divorce, family lines have been broken and people just are not as attached to their silver heirlooms and gold jewelry as they were in the past.

A precious metal analyst quoted in the article also commented that people sometimes make negative associations with pawn shops. There is something to this. It seems that it is better to sell something outright than it is to hock it at a pawn shop.  However you may feel about pawn shops and whatever you may think about the reputation that pawn shops have, there are other reason to sell gold instead of pawning it. When you sell your gold, you do not have to be concerned with coming back for it. It now belongs to someone else. And if you are willing to pawn it, that means you are willing to do without it, so you may want to consider selling it instead.

Although someone may still be dismayed at the thought to parting with a precious piece of gold jewelry, that dismay does not outweigh their need to a little economic boost.  So don’t let pride get in the way. If you have old gold jewelry that you can sell, why not do it.  I recently sold a broken gold chain that I knew I was not going to repair myself and the cash for gold that I got came in quite handy.

The Vanishing 2008 Bald Eagle Gold Coin

Last month, we mentioned that the Double Eagle gold coin is quite valuable, mainly because they are not at all easy to find. The Double Eagle gold coin was not produced in mass quantities because the U.S. Mint did not accept the design for this particular coin.

The design did not pass muster because it was not practical enough to be used to fabricate large quantities of gold coins. At least this was the official reason. It is likely that politics also played in big role in determining that the Double Eagle gold coin did not enter into production in a big way. Since so few of these gold coins were produced, they never made into circulation for the general population.

Well, recently another gold coin that depicts an eagle has been in the news. The 2008 Bald Eagle commemorative gold coin is apparently all the rage these days and a must-have for those who collect gold coins. Those who travel in coin-collecting circles were told that the clock was ticking for people who want to buy these commemorative gold coins. In fact, time is now up. Apparently the very last time to buy these gold coins was this past weekend. Last Friday it was reported that there were 29,000 of the five-dollar gold coins left for consumers to buy.

Sorry we did not mention it to you earlier, but we figured that you wanted to sell gold and were not at all interested in some gold coins that show a bald eagle. We are certain that what you are really interested in is selling your gold to a gold buyer to get cash for gold. Because, as you already know, the clock will never run out for those of you who want to sell gold. You can sell gold, today, tomorrow or next week.

The 2008 Bald Eagle coins were issued to pay homage to the 35th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. As we said, one thing that will never be endangered is the opportunity to sell gold. Gold remains in demand and this is not going to change. Unlike endangered species like the bald eagle, who can unfortunately be hunted to the point where there are very few left, the gold supply is continually renewed because people sell gold and it is melted down and reused over and over again. When you sell gold, you are keeping it in circulation.

Silver Bells that Bring in Gold

Every year about this time, you see those big red Salvation Army kettles outside of stores. Next to the kettles stand volunteers who continuously clang silver bells to attract the attention of shoppers and passersby in the hopes that they will stop and consider donating a little of their change (or dollars) to help the less fortunate.

Charitable organizations thrive on these small donations. Many people dropping in a few coins does make a difference However, groups like the Salvation Army also get by on large, often anonymous offerings that are quite valuable.

There is a tradition of people dropping gold coins to add to the Salvation Army coffers. If you have done it or know someone who has, then you are in good company because people have been doing this since 1982.

Just recently, someone put some gold coins into a Salvation army kettle in Indiana. One of the gold coins that the Salvation Army in Indiana received is presumed to be from China; it has a panda on one side and a pagoda on the other. The other gold coin is a coin form the year 1881. This coin has a $5 face value and features an image of Liberty on one side and an eagle on the other side.

Although is seems that the Salvation Army does not know the identity of this gold coin benefactor, they were able to get some information on where the coins came from. Someone who works in the store where one of the gold coins was purchased told the news media that a woman paid more than $100 for the gold coin with the pagoda on it. She let this person in on her plans, saying that she was going to give the gold coin to charity.

We are all in favor of giving to charity and applaud people like the woman for their acts of generosity. Those that volunteer to assist with those kettles certainly hear the clinks of coins are they are dropped in, but can never be sure of the exact value of what is in the kettle until the contents are removed and examined later.

You should give your coins generously, but if you want to reserve some of your gold coins to sell gold to a gold buyer to get cash for gold, we completely understand.

Red and Rose Gold are All the Rage

One news outlet recently reported that reddish gold is the latest “it” color for making gold jewelry. As with all fashion forecasting, hot colors come and go in and out of style and to be honest, no one really knows why. Whatever the case, colors go in and out of fashion, but the value of gold itself does not come into question.

Rose and red gold are not new, although these types of gold were recently pronounced to be a “new” trend in jewelry. Not only is reddish gold the thing to have now, combining gold colors is popular as well. Jewelry that combines white and yellow gold or brings together rose and red gold is also all the rage. Rose gold is not only a must-have for gold jewelry such as gold earrings, gold necklaces and gold bracelets, this kind of gold is also sought after as a finish for gold watches.

Funny, I seem to remember when I was young that tri-color gold (a combination of three different colors of gold) was very popular as well. And that was quite a few years ago. But as they say, everything old is new again.

If you are looking to sell gold, however, you do not have to worry about its color. Gold buyers are looking for gold in all colors and they will not turn you away if your gold is of the “plain” yellow variety. They will welcome you with open arms, in fact. Gold that comes in different colors is made from alloys that occur when gold is mixed with other metals.

Gold is considered to be pure gold when it is 18 karat gold. When copper and zinc are the metals mixed in an alloy with pure gold, yellow gold is formed. Copper alloys are also used to make rose gold, although the mix results in gold has a reddish tint to it. The combination of pure gold with white metals like palladium and silver are what make white gold.

A gold buyer has to melt down gold objects in order to extract the pure gold. When you sell gold objects made that contain other metals, there is more separating to do. But do not let that stop you from selling gold objects, be they made of yellow gold,  white gold, rose gold, or red gold.

Metal-detecting Hobbyists Find Lost Gold Ring

Some of us have hobbies that we find very enjoyable and they help us to relax, but these hobbies do not always help other people in direct ways. It you like to knit and you knit someone a scarf, then that is an instance where your hobby helped you and someone else can say they benefited from your hobby in a tangible way.

But what if your hobby was metal detecting? Can that hobby be used to help another person in a tangible way? The answer (as you have probably guessed) is that yes, of course it can.

Two man in England who like nothing more than to scour the land with metal detectors did just that and reunited a 72-year old man with a gold ring that was a family heirloom.

Unlike similar stories where people have found gold jewelry in one place and had to trace it back to the owner, this man’s ring was found on his very own land.

Two men who like the thrill of metal detecting asked the man’s permission to go over his land. Since the men have a reputation for being careful and considerate metal detectors, he granted them permission.

It only took a day and a half for the men to find the gold ring. This gold ring was a gift that the man had received from his father more than fifty years earlier and he had lost it 25 years ago. The metal-detecting hobbyists found the ring and returned it to the man, who was very happy to get it back.

Now these men and the man who was reunited with his gold ring are in England. And if you are in England, you may be able to get these same men to come look for gold rings and other treasures at your place. But it is more likely that you will have to do a little digging yourself. It is also likely that you will not have to step outside as those men did. You probably have a lot of gold jewelry waiting to be discovered right inside you very own house or apartment. Gold rings do have a way of getting away from you, as do gold chains and gold earrings.

Once you find some gold jewelry that you no long want to keep, remember that you can sell gold to a gold buyer and get cash for gold.

More on the Civil War Gold Hoax

During a president’s time in office (and especially near the end of a president’s term), there are opportunities for people who have committed crimes to be pardoned. Of course, people clamor for the chance to have the president release them from the punishment they have received.

The man who perpetrated the Civil War Gold Hoax was one of these very people. The man who had used his knowledge of the inner workings of the newspaper system of his day to make sure that gold prices would skyrocket (after he had invested lots and lots of money in gold), did not serve a full term. He scared many people, caused a panic and his ruse wreaked havoc on the stock market. After the price of gold rose, he quickly to advantage of the high prices, selling gold and making a handsome profit.

It is said that President Abraham Lincoln, however, was moved to pardon the architect of the Civil War Gold Hoax, in part because was swayed by the eloquent appeal of Henry Ward Beecher. Beecher, who was a friend of the man’s father, urged Lincoln to pardon the man.

The Civil War Hoax worked because one man knew how to get fake information into the newspapers and he knew that a report of Lincoln calling for more troops would be a blow to the nation’s financial confidence. In his false reports that lead to the stock market upheaval and the increase in the price of gold, the greedy young man had not known that he was seeing into the future, somewhat.

The part that the dishonest newspaper editor got wrong (besides the date), was the number of troops Lincoln would eventually call: it turns out that the editor underestimated the number of troops by 100,000.

Some way that that is uncanny knowledge that in a way predicted what would happen also helped Lincoln in his decision to pardon the man who single-handedly changed the price of gold with a rumor.

When you take your gold to a gold buyer, you will not have to rely on rumors. A gold buyer will test your gold to tell you what it is worth. And if you want to learn about the price of gold before you go to sell gold to a gold buyer, check out www.thebulliondesk.com.
That way you will be informed of the latest news in the gold, silver, platinum and palladium markets.
