Elvis’s Gold Ring Has Left the Building

Filed under: All Gold, Gold Jewelry Types, News — Tags: , , , — GoldGuru @ 5:00 am

Earlier this month, someone paid $18,300 at auction for what is reputed to be a pile of Elvis Presley’s hair. This was hair that was removed from his head when he joined the army in the 1950s.

Can you imagine paying that kind of money for hair? How do they even know that it really belonged to Elvis?  Why would hair clippings be worth that much?

It has also been announced that another treasure that belonged to Elvis is going up for sale soon, but this item would be valuable even d it had not onced belonged to The King.

Someone will have the chance to buy a very unique gold ring that Elvis once wore while performing. Since it is gold ring and we all know the ever-increasing value of gold, it would be worth something no matter what. The fact that it once adorned the finger of a music superstar makes it worth that much more.

And this gold ring has a story that goes with it–Elvis gave it to a concert goer in 1975 after that man caught the guitar Elvis threw into the crowd, but let someone else have it. Eventually Elvis brought the man onstage and gave him a gold rind with 19 diamonds.

We are not sure where this man is now and imagine that if someone set to sell a gold ring of this magnitude, there must be a pretty good reason why. Perhaps that man is deceased and no one in his family has that much nostalgia for Elvis.

Whatever the reason, people know that now is great time to sell gold. Since the price of gold has increased the cash for gold you can get for selling gold items has also increased. The sooner you contact a gold buyer, the sooner you can get your cash for gold.

Celtic Football Medal to Be Auctioned Off

If we were to tell you that a gold Celtic football medal of historical importance was going to auctioned off soon, what would you picture in your mind? Perhaps a game in which ancient Celtic warriors used a gold object that is similar to the footballs we use today? Or maybe you would envision some ancient gold relic that was used to reward the winner or winners of some primitive game that historians think resembled football.

If you did not think of either of these things, then you might be on your way to guessing the true nature of this gold Celtic football. The gold football in question really is not ancient, unless you consider the 1950s to be ancient times.

Celebrated Celtic football player (and manager) Jock Stein was award a gold medal for the 1953-1954 sports season. Stein received the medal because the Celtic team did quite well that season. And since we are talking about England, the “football” in question may actually be soccer.

That whole football/soccer thing may be one of those issues that can be lost (or found) in translation because as someone famously once said, people who speak English are divided by a common language. One thing that is clear worldwide is that no matter what language you speak, the price of gold had increased and is continuing to increase.

It is a great time to sell gold. Whether it is a gold medal, gold coins, gold cuff links, a gold watch or old gold jewelry, you can get cash for gold if you have gold objects that you can say goodbye to without too much fuss.

The New Gold Rush

Filed under: All Gold, News — Tags: , — GoldGuru @ 5:00 am

Last week we referred to the Georgia town of Dahlonega, which was celebrating its role in gold rush history with a festival.

This week, we are here to tell you that gold rushes are not necessarily a thing of the past. The San Francisco Chronicle reported recently that there is a new gold rush afoot in California. Much of this new excitement over the possibilities of gold stems from the high price of gold.

Depending on where they are from, some people are traveling hundreds of miles to try their luck at panning gold. They probably have much more comfortable rides than those first gold rush pioneers did and they may or may not be hoping for a brand new life. The gold rush pioneers had to leave everything behind, whereas today’s gold rushers are likely to return home and have little thoughts of settling in a new territory. While today’s gol rushers really are hoping to make some money, and most think they may gain a little, all of them do not truly believe that panning for gold will make them permanently rich.

The San Francisco Chronicle also reported that the number of permits or claims for gold mining has increased quite a bit this year. And of course this is not a surprise since people seem to be more and more interested in buying and selling gold.

While you definitely need a permit to go out into nature and mine gold, you do not need one to mine your own personal treasury for gold that you can sell to a gold buyer. You need not take any epic journeys (unless you count your attic, basement or neglected closets as dangerous territory). You simply have to look around for gold that you are not going to use and contact an online gold buyer, who will send you a postage-paid envelope.

Georgia Town Honors its Past with Gold Rush Days

Filed under: All Gold, Blog, News — Tags: , , — GoldGuru @ 5:00 am

This past summer we told you about how two towns in Georgia. Dahlonega and Villa Rica were in a competition to be declared the town that had the country’s first gold rush. Nevermind the fact that the country’s most famous gold rush took place in California–if you can’t be famous, why not at least be named first? Both Dahlonega and Villa Rica can claim that people came to those towns looking for gold in the late 1820s, so their gold rushes pre-date the 1849 California gold rush by 2 decades.

For its part Dahlonega was working hard to make sure that the Dahlonega Gold Museum could stay open seven days a week in order to bolster its claims and have a stronger footing in the competition to gain status as America’s first gold rush town.

Earlier this week, we talked about Diwali, a South Asian festival during which people buy gold as part of the festivities. Well, these are not the festivities this time of year in which gold plays a major part.

During the third weekend of October, Dahlonega celebrates Gold Rush Days, a festival to honor its past role in gold mining. This year festival organizers expect to see perhaps 200,000 people arrive to celebrate the gold-rich past with them. There will even be a concession stand dedicated to gold mining, which was inspired by that original gold rush. As one of the organizers commented, the current price of gold should encourage people to take an interest in gold mining.

If, however you are unable to make it down to Georgia in time for Gold Rush Days, you can still reap the benefits of the high price of gold. Instead of spending a lot of time outside at a gold panning concession stand, you can “pan” for gold within the comfort of your own home. Look around for any old gold or broken gold jewelry so you can sell gold to a gold buyer.

Price of Gold Affects Diwali Holiday Shopping Habits

The condition of the world economy has an effect on holiday celebrations everywhere. While merchants in the United States are doing their best to figure out just how they will lure shoppers and convince them to buy during the holiday season here, vendors in other countries are also facing the same issue. Everyone wants to strike gold and find that one product o r group of products that shoppers will not be able to resist.

This past weekend marked the start of the Hindu festival of Diwali. One important part of this South Asian religious holiday is that people buy gold and lots of it, usually. Gold bars and gold coins, as well as gold jewelry and gold adornments are snatched up as the holiday approaches.

Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights and celebrates the triumph of good over evil on a personal level. It also celebrates the victory and homecoming of certain cultural heroes who were welcomed with lights. The hero being celebrated depends on the region and this holiday is observed by South Asians of different faiths.

This year, the worldwide recession, along with the increase in the price of gold has changed people’s normal holiday gold buying habits. Where at one time people bought gold and did not think of buying platinum, some have decided with the price of gold being as high as it is, they might as well buy platinum.

Jewelers  who want to sell gold are also selling smaller pieces of jewelry–be it gold, platinum or diamonds–perhaps in an effort to win over reluctant consumers. The smaller pieces may cost more than people want to pay, but they are still priced lower that larger pieces of jewelry

Special Design for 2010 Olympic Games Gold Medals

Filed under: All Gold, Blog, News — Tags: , , — GoldGuru @ 5:00 am

The gold medals that will be awarded during the upcoming 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games have gone through a very collaborative design process. Both Olympic and Paralympic athletes were able to give their input into the design of the gold medals that they are hoping to win early next year. Athletes are not jewelry designers, but that does not mean that they do not have an eye for what looks good. Besides, the athletes are the ones who will eventually wear and take home the gold medals, so it is good that they have a say in the overall look for the gold medals.

The games will take place in Vancouver, so the Royal Canadian Mint has been tasked with producing the gold medals, which will have a one-of-a-kind undulating surface, instead of a flat one. This, plus the fact that the medals will have images from modern-day Aboriginal art will make them sought after, both by athletes and collectors of gold.

Perhaps you have some pieces of gold that you consider to be original, but not so original that you want to hang onto them forever. After all, one of the main reasons that we hold onto things as long as we do is because they have sentimental value. And if something does not have sentimental value, then we keep it because we think that it will grow in monetary value one day. If you doubt that your gold jewelry or gold coins will become collector’s items and you want to make space for more things around the house, why not sell gold to a gold buyer. Then you can take the cash for gold you get as proceeds for selling gold and buy gold items that you want to keep because it may increase in value.

Woman Fooled Into Searching for Gold Coins

It was the kind of scenario many of us dream about…the kind of thing that gets written into movies and screenplays. You find a note in a piece of old furniture directing you to a buried treasure that could change your life.

A woman from Illinois recently went through the first and last parts of that scenario; it was just the middle part (finding buried treasure) that was missing. After coming across a note in a vintage rocking chair, the woman set out to dig up the treasure outlined in the note. Instead of finding that over $250 in gold coins, the woman only came across trash.

Another woman who is from Iowa found out about this misadventure and claimed she knew what happened. According to her, the misleading note that pointed towards a nonexistent treasury of U.S. gold coins, was the work of a well-known prankster who passed away decades ago. So this pranksters penchant for playing tricks on people has even outlasted him. He did not get to see the results of this particular prank, but that may be a good thing. After all, gold coins are an excellent lure and anyone who has spent time and energy trying to dig them up is not going to happy to realize that it was all a part of a hoax. And in out society where people sue each other quite often, such a prankster could be faced with a lawsuit.

We cannot tell you just where some gold coins may be buried, but we can tell you that a gold buyer will be happy to buy your gold coins, if you really do in fact have gold coins, it is quite easy to sell gold coins online. And don’t worry, the cash for gold you can get is the real thing.

Pre-Columbian Gold

Filed under: All Gold, News — Tags: , — GoldGuru @ 5:00 am

As we noted earlier this week, gold was one of the main motivations that Christopher Columbus had when he set sail from Spain. Gold was just as popular centuries ago as it is now. And even though Columbus was not the first person to land on the shores of America, his name has been associated with the beginning of the era of contact between the Old World and the New World.

Treasures that existed in the New World long before Columbus are indentified as “pre-Columbian”. The term can be used to refer to the ancient Aztec, Mayan and Incan peoples, as well as other lesser-known civilizations that existed at the same time. These ancient civilizations pioneered processes in gold mining and working with the metal.

In fact, an exhibit of pre-Columbian gold is now on display at the Dennos Museum Center, located in Traverse City, Michigan. The exhibit opened on October 11, so it was timed to coincide with the Columbus Day holiday and will be on display until March 2010.

Some of the 120 gold pieces that are a part of this exhibit can be traced back 1,000 years. A group from the University of Pennsylvania found these pieces in the 1940s as they were excavating an ancient site in Panama. The gold that they found was quite a find because a lot of these ancient treasures were lost because the Spanish melted down a lot of pre-Columbian gold jewelry and figures to use for other purposes.

Yes, if you have every wondered just how gold is recycled, it is simply melted down. But really it is not all that simple. If a gold object contains other metals, the pure gold has to be extracted. And this is not the kind of melting that can be done on a stove either. Gold must be melted at very high temperatures. This is why you should not attempt to melt down gold at home, instead you can sell gold to a gold buyer.

Columbus Set Sail in Search of Gold

Today is October 12, the day we celebrate as Columbus Day. Whether or not you agree with the idea that Christopher Columbus actually discovered America, you can probably agree with the notion that finding what we now call America was not really what Columbus set out to do.

So what did Columbus set out to do? There are some will tell you that he set sail from Spain in search of spices. While spices were certainly of great importance in the ancient world, it is hard to believe that a crew would undertake such a dangerous mission solely to find spices.

According to the famous poem “In 1492″,

Columbus sailed on to find some gold
To bring back home, as he’d been told.

He made the trip again and again,
Trading gold to bring to Spain
.

Yes, that is right–Columbus set off on a dangerous mission because he hoped to find gold for his Spanish benefactors.

Gold has certainly not lost its luster or appeal in the years since Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We recognize the value of gold, just as the people who lived in 1492 did. In fact, it might even be easier to obtain and sell gold now than it was back then. For one thing, you do not have to seek the patronage of any king or queen s that you can purchase ships and supplies to mount a major expedition. Nor do you need to have to worry about being away from home for an untold number of months. You just need to find some old gold jewelry that you probably already have and send it in to a gold buyer who will be happy to give you cash for gold in exchange for gold you no longer want.

Recycling Gold

A mining company has recently found a substantial amount of gold in three different areas in the northern part of Mexico. And of course finding the gold they did find only made this mining company more eager to keep exploring with the hopes of finding even more gold.

Although none of our natural resources are in never-ending supply, gold is one of those things that we have not managed to run out of despite the fact that people have been searching for gold since ancient times. Now, at times the gold supply in one particular area may have been exhausted, but someone can usually find gold in another part of the world if they continue to look.

Still, even with the abundance of gold that there is, we are still doing the earth a service when we decide to recycle and reuse the gold that has already been mined. After all, if someone has already taken the time to extract it and we do not really want to use it, we are not going to be able to return it to the earth from whence it came.

The truth is, most of us really have no idea exactly where our gold came from or even when it was mined. What we can do is make sure that it gets used again. Yes, a gold buyer is in the business of buying gold, but they do not just buy gold to hold onto it. When people sell gold to a gold buyer, the gold buyer extracts the pure gold in order to see that it is re-used by someone else. People will continue to mine gold, but we can still do our part by recycling the gold that has already been mined–and if you earn some cash for gold while doing this, that is even  better.
